PSC Reaffirms Mandatory Promotion Exams for Police Officers

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of 219 senior police officers, reinforcing its policy that career progression within the Nigeria Police Force must be merit-based.
Among those elevated is Egbeyemi Olayinka Saheed, a former Commander of the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), and the Raider D9 Section of Lagos State CID, Panti, who was promoted from Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
The latest round of promotions, finalized during the PSC’s plenary session on Tuesday, also includes:
- 26 Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) promoted to Deputy Commissioners (DCPs)
- 23 Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs), including Egbeyemi, promoted to Assistant Commissioners (ACPs)
- 170 Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) elevated to Deputy Superintendents (DSPs)
Egbeyemi, a well-known operational commander in Lagos, has played a crucial role in crime-fighting, security enforcement, and urban policing. His promotion reflects his years of service and commitment to law enforcement.
Other high-ranking officers promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) include:
- Tarzan Yusuf Tsav – Area Commander, Irrua, Edo State
- Samantha Nansah Barko – ACP, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Bauchi
- Shehu Wase Abdullahi – Area Commander, Kazaure, Jigawa State
- Ajeigbe Olayinka – Area Commander, Area ‘M’ Idimu, Lagos
- Abubakar Haruna – Area Commander, Metro, Jos, Plateau State
- Elisha Daniel Bawa – ACP, Operations, Kwara State Command
- Ibrahim Abdul Ahmed – Area Commander, Katsina-Ala, Benue State
Among the 23 CSPs promoted to ACPs are:
- Ibrahim Kayode Ajanaku
- Uduaku Bassey Edet
- Kabir Afolabi Kazeem
- Abubakar Mu’azu Dalhatu
- Tudun-wada Munir Ahmad
For the 170 ASPs promoted to DSPs, officers from across various state commands, intelligence units, and special formations made the list.
During the promotion exercise, PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd.), emphasized that promotion exams are now a permanent requirement for advancing within the police force. He stated that the PSC is committed to transparency, accountability, and meritocracy in promotions, ensuring that only qualified and competent officers move to higher ranks.
“We will not promote any officer who has not gone through one form of examination or another in line with the existing public service rules,” Argungu said.
The process was supervised by DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd.), Honourable Commissioner representing the Police in the PSC, and Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani, who conducted interactive interviews and oversaw the written examinations.
