The Nigeria Police Force has handed over dismissed officers linked to the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old rapper, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution.

The victim was allegedly shot by former Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, during an operation triggered by intelligence that Ogidi had received a package said to contain a firearm.

Videos of the incident circulating online show the suspect restrained and pleading for his life, insisting on his innocence and offering to help trace the sender of the package, moments before he was shot at close range.

The footage, widely shared on social media, has intensified public outrage and calls for justice.

Police authorities confirmed that all personnel found culpable in the incident have been dismissed from service, with the decision ratified by the Police Service Commission.

Their dismissal clears the way for criminal prosecution, in line with established procedures that require officers to be removed from service before facing trial in civilian courts.

The Force has not publicly detailed the specific charges to be filed, but legal experts say the case is likely to involve counts ranging from murder to abuse of authority, depending on the outcome of investigations and advice from federal prosecutors.

The incident has drawn comparisons with previous cases of alleged extrajudicial killings by security personnel, a long-standing concern highlighted during the 2020 #EndSARS protests against police brutality.

Meanwhile, the victim’s mother, Mrs Stella Ogidi, has demanded the death penalty for the officers involved, describing the killing as unjust and devastating.

She said the loss was particularly painful as it was the second time she had lost a son to police action, a claim that has further deepened public sympathy and anger over the case.
