A police officer is to face prosecution over the fatal shooting of a suspect who had already been arrested and restrained in Effurun, Delta State.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, involved Mene Ogidi, a suspect who had been apprehended by transport union members at Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway.

He was reportedly caught attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, officers attached to the Effurun Area Command were responding to credible information when they moved to take the suspect into lawful custody.

However, during the process, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in breach of established police regulations, leading to the suspect’s death.

Police authorities have since ordered the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to Abuja, where they are to face the Force Disciplinary Committee.

Placid confirmed that the officer will also be subjected to prosecution.

In a notable move, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, extended condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging the gravity of the incident and assuring them that justice would be pursued in line with the law.

The police leadership stressed that the killing was a violation of operational guidelines and reiterated its position against extra-judicial actions and abuse of authority.

The case has brought renewed focus to the principle that suspects remain innocent until proven guilty and must be treated within the bounds of the law, regardless of the allegations against them.

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as both disciplinary and legal processes continue, while reaffirming a commitment to uphold professional standards and public trust.

A video of the incident, now widely circulated, shows the suspect restrained and seated before the fatal shot was fired.

The footage indicates that the shooting occurred in full public view, raising serious concerns about the conduct of the operation.

The video further shows the victim lying motionless after the shooting, while two other officers move the body into a patrol vehicle.

The footage has intensified public reaction and heightened calls for transparency and justice in the handling of the case.
