The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned one Chukwuka Samuel Onovo before Justice Mojisola Dada of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, for allegedly stealing N42 million proceeds from the sale of four vehicles entrusted to him.

Onovo, who posed as an auto dealer, was accused of selling a 2009 Toyota Highlander SUV, 2015 Mercedes-Benz C300, 2016 Mercedes-Benz C300, and 2010 Mercedes-Benz C300 belonging to petitioner Cajetan Alinnor, and diverting the funds to construct a duplex at 42 John Okorie Street, Olodi-Apapa, where he now resides.

According to the EFCC, the petitioner engaged Onovo in 2022 to sell the vehicles under an agreement requiring him to secure approval for offers and remit payments directly to the owner, who would then pay Onovo his commission. However, investigations revealed that Onovo secretly registered and sold the cars, failing to remit the proceeds.

The charge reads: “You, Chukwuka Samuel Onovo, sometime within January and December, 2023, in Lagos, with a dishonest intent, stole and converted to your own use the sum of N42,000,000.00, being proceeds of the sale of four vehicles, property of Cajetan Alinnor, thereby committing an offence of stealing, contrary to and punishable under Sections 280 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”

Onovo pleaded not guilty, prompting EFCC counsel A.A. Usman to request his remand and a trial date. Justice Dada granted the prayer, ordered his remand in a Correctional Centre, and adjourned the case to October 30, 2025, for trial.
