The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has uncovered an alleged internet fraud training centre in Abuja, rescuing 29 recruits who were reportedly held in confinement and arresting two suspected kingpins behind the operation.

The agency said the raid was carried out on Thursday at Becki Estate, Karu, in the Federal Capital Territory, where the recruits were found undergoing organised cyber fraud training under restrictive and coercive conditions.

According to the EFCC, items recovered from the suspects include mobile phones, 18 laptop computers and other electronic devices believed to have been used for fraudulent activities.

Preliminary investigations revealed that some of the recruits were lured from Benue State with promises of legitimate employment.

However, upon arrival at the facility, they were allegedly inducted into internet fraud operations and provided with communication gadgets, computers and specialised software for training.

The Commission further disclosed that the recruits were housed within the premises and had their movements strictly restricted.

Their mobile phones were reportedly confiscated, effectively cutting them off from the outside world.

Investigators also alleged that the operators enforced strict discipline through corporal punishment, with physical assault meted out to trainees who failed to comply with instructions.

The EFCC said the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
