Thirty-four suspected Internet fraudsters, including 23 students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, have been held by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The commission disclosed this in a post on its Facebook account today.
Items allegedly recovered from the suspects include over 300 SIM cards, different brands of cars, 18 laptops (nine being of Apple brand), 50 mobile phones (21iPhoness) and two bags of charms.
The suspects who are between 19 and 37 years were arrested yesterday at 21 Sawmill Road, Awa-Ijebu, Ogun State.
The suspects include nine ladies who allegedly claimed to be girlfriends or neighbours of some of the suspects.
One of the ladies claimed to be a student of the National Open University of Nigeria, while 12 others are non-students.
The commission said that it got wind of the suspects’ activities through intelligence reports.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects perpetrated their fraudulent acts by sending emails to unsuspecting victims mostly in the United States, while others were engaged in romance scams.
The agency said the suspects would be charged to court as soon the investigation was concluded.
