Troops from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have pierced through the Gambia border like a hot knife through butter.
According to reports early today, the joint military exercise meant to push out the Gambia leader, Yahya Jammeh met no resistance from the country’s military.
The troops are said to be heading for the State House, which is the seat of government.
Jammeh’s tenure terminates today.
The inauguration of the country’s President-elect, Adama Barrow, would hold at 4pm at the Gambian embassy in Senegal. Barrow stated in a post on Facebook.
Also in his tweet, Barrow @adama_barrow, said: “I would like to inform you that the Inauguration Ceremony is going to take place at the Gambian Embassy in Dakar, Senegal.’’
The ECOWAS troops entered The Gambia after midnight, hours after last minute talks between Mauritania President Mohamed Abdel Aziz and Jammeh fell through.
A resident in Banjul told reporters that the streets of capital have been deserted but Gambians are awake and anxious. There have been no reported cases of gunfire yet.
Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana and Togo contributed to the military coalition.
