A viral video showing a man confronting a woman wearing a T-shirt bearing the image of President Bola Tinubu has become the latest flashpoint in Nigeria’s growing debate over economic hardship and public frustration with the government’s policies.

The 26-second clip, widely shared across social media platforms, captures the man approaching the woman in what appears to be a market and repeatedly questioning her over the shirt.

“This President Tinubu shirt you’re wearing now, how do you feel wearing it? As you’re trekking around, how do you feel?” he asks as the woman walks away without responding.

While the exchange was brief, it has resonated with many Nigerians who see it as a reflection of mounting public anger over the rising cost of living and the economic difficulties that have persisted under President Tinubu’s administration.

The video comes amid continuing concerns over food inflation, transport costs and household purchasing power despite government assurances that key economic reforms are beginning to yield positive results.

Since taking office in 2023, Tinubu has implemented far-reaching measures, including the removal of petrol subsidies and reforms to the foreign exchange market, policies his administration says are necessary to stabilise the economy and attract investment.

However, many Nigerians continue to struggle with the immediate impact of those reforms, fuelling criticism from opposition politicians, civil society groups and ordinary citizens.

The confrontation has drawn sharply divided reactions online.

Some social media users described the incident as a manifestation of public frustration directed at those perceived to support the ruling administration.

Others condemned the man’s conduct, arguing that no citizen should be publicly challenged or intimidated because of their political beliefs or personal choices.

Beyond the encounter itself, the incident has highlighted the increasingly visible ways in which economic hardship is shaping public discourse. What might once have been an ordinary political symbol, a campaign T-shirt, has become a lightning rod for wider conversations about governance, accountability and the daily realities facing millions of Nigerians.
