An explosion in the early hours of Tuesday rattled the General Hospital in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State, prompting widespread alarm among residents and staff

The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed that a loud blast occurred at the hospital premises around first light on December 30.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said the force responded swiftly, working with military and local vigilante units to secure the scene and prevent further threats to public safety.

Specialist officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit were deployed to assess the site, while additional tactical deployments were ordered by the state’s Commissioner of Police to maintain order in Bagudo and reassure residents.

Police have stressed that there were no casualties from the blast.

A building within the hospital’s staff quarters sustained damage, but occupants had evacuated the structure before the explosion occurred, averting injuries or fatalities.

The force has urged residents to remain calm and avoid the immediate vicinity of the hospital to allow security operatives to carry out their duties without hindrance.

A comprehensive investigation into the cause of the explosion and the circumstances surrounding it is ongoing.

Witnesses described scenes of panic at the facility as patients, visitors and medical personnel rushed to safety after hearing the blast, which echoed across the community.

Authorities have yet to determine what triggered the explosion, and it is not immediately clear if the incident was deliberate, accidental or linked to broader security challenges in the region.

Investigators continue to gather evidence and assess forensic findings from the scene.

Residents of Bagudo and neighbouring areas have been advised to report any unusual activity to security agencies as part of efforts to support the ongoing investigation and safeguard the community.

Further updates are expected as officials and security services release more details.
