An operative of the Department of State Services has attacked a Former Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Chinedum Elechi.
The ex-Speaker has described the attack on him on November 14, 2022 as an attempt to “butcher” him by the Officer.
Elechi, who is the Director-General Peoples Democratic Party Campaign Organisation in Abia State, alleged that the person behind the attack on Sunday in Umuahia, the state capital, was an operative of the DSS from the Ebonyi State Command.
He said on his Facebook page: “The DSS operative wanted to machete me to death yesterday at Azikiwe Road in Umuahia in a broad day light (and) his excuse is that I scratched his car, which is not true.

“He chased after me; blocked the car I was driving in, came out of his car, used the machete to break the glasses of my car and commenced to butcher me in this way.”
Reacting to the development, the Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, expressed anger.
Ikpeazu, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Onyebuchi Ememanka, said: “The campaign director-general was attacked by an individual who is alleged to be an operative of the DSS in Ebonyi State Command with a sharp machete, leaving him with multiple machete cuts all over his body.”
The Governor demanded “a thorough investigation into this inexplicable display of murderous barbarism”.
He also urged the Abia State Commissioner of Police “to ensure that the assailant is made to face the full weight of the law.”
Ikpeazu commended the courage of the members of the public and men of the Nigeria Police who helped to overpower the assailant and recovered the instrument of attack.
The spokesman of the Abia State Police Command, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, said the attacker was arrested immediately after the ugly incident and kept in police custody.
Ogbonna assured the public that investigation has commenced to enable the police determine the next line of action.
Ikpeazu, who visited Elechi in the hospital, vowed to bring to book the security operative who attacked him.
Addressing the press when he visited Elechi at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Governor Ikpeazu thanked God for sparing his life despite the degree of machete cuts sustained in the attack.
The Governor stated that it is unfortunate that someone could use machete to slash the head and skin of his fellow human being as well as destroy his car for no justifiable reason.
He said he would make sure the assailant and people of such character would not be allowed to stay among sane people, but be put in their proper places.
Governor Ikpeazu, who thanked the management and staff of the FMC, who were on ground to provide the necessary care to the victim, also thanked God that the victim is stable and expressed hope that he would recover quickly.
Elechi narrated his ordeal and thanked God for people who rushed to save his life from the assailant who clearly came to kill him.
He appreciated Governor Ikpeazu for coming to identify with him and other friends, colleagues and well-wishers and particularly the management of FMC for all their assistance in saving his life.
The Chief Medical Director of the FMC, Professor Azubuike Onyebuchi, also informed the Governor that surgery has successfully been performed on the victim and that he is stable now and on way to recovery.
