Delta State Government Advocates Stronger Media Collaboration as Dr. Latimore Calls for Adherence to Professional Ethics to Combat Misinformation

Journalists in Delta State have been praised for their commitment to professional ethics in their reportage and information dissemination.

The commendation was given by Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, the Director General of the Delta State Bureau of Orientation and Communications, during a gathering with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, on Sunday in Asaba.

Dr. Latimore highlighted the exceptional unity, organization, and moral integrity displayed by Delta NUJ, placing them among the best in the country. He acknowledged the proficiency of several union members who consistently deliver credible information to the public.

He noted that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is pleased with the performance of journalists in the state and values the positive relationship between the media and the state government, which he emphasized should be maintained.

While stating that the government welcomes media criticism, Dr. Latimore insisted that such criticism must be constructive and grounded in verifiable facts. He expressed concern over the increasing tendency of some online media platforms in the state to disregard professional ethics, warning that such practices not only damage the reputation of those inaccurately reported but also undermine the credibility of the media outlets involved.

Dr. Latimore urged journalists to seek clarification on state government-related issues primarily from the Commissioner for Information or the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor. He added that other information managers, including himself and the Manager of Communications, are also available to provide necessary insights.

He pledged to maintain a collaborative relationship with media practitioners in the state, ensuring open communication and mutual understanding. The event, he said, was designed to foster such relationships, with the Bureau of Orientation and Communications ready to partner with the NUJ whenever necessary.

“Some of these stories should be verified. We have various individuals responsible for handling information in the state, led by the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, who also chairs the State Information Management Council,” Dr. Latimore said.

“Our colleagues in the media can always reach out for clarification on any issue. We are committed to providing clear and accurate information. Professionals like you are the gatekeepers—whether as news editors, publishers, or sub-editors. Your responsibility is to scrutinize the information before it is published. Verify the facts with the government to ensure accuracy. Misinformation is harmful to the individual concerned and to the reputation of the media outlet.”

Dr. Latimore appealed for a closer relationship between the media and the state government, emphasizing that the media remains a critical partner in the state’s progress.

In his remarks, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, Chairman of the NUJ Delta State Council, praised Dr. Latimore for his effectiveness as an information manager, citing his previous roles in the administration of Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa and his current position under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. Comrade Oyowe assured the DG of the journalists’ readiness to partner with the Bureau in driving its initiatives and called for the inclusion of union members in the Bureau’s activities.
