The Delta State Police Command has ordered the redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer of Jesse Division, CSP Chidi Nwabuzor, and launched an internal investigation following allegations that officers extorted N2.5 million to secure the release of a suspect arrested for illegal possession of a firearm.

The move follows a viral video in which a woman alleged that the DPO and two officers, identified as Bright and Usman, collected the sum of N2.5 million from her under the promise that her brother, who was in police custody, would be released.

In a press release issued on Friday and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, the command said the Commissioner of Police, CP Aina Adesola, ordered the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the X Squad to investigate the allegation.

“The Command is aware of the viral video recording of a woman alleging that one officer Bright, officer Usman and the DPO Jesse extorted from her the sum of two million, five hundred thousand naira with the hope that her brother, who is presently in custody, will be released,” the statement said.

According to the police, preliminary findings showed that the incident originated from the arrest of suspects by the youth leader of Jesse community on January 1, 2026.

The suspects were subsequently taken to the police station, among them a 20 year old man identified as Israel Onojeruo.

SP Bright explained that Onojeruo was arrested based on the confession of another suspect, Okoro Desmond, who allegedly told investigators that he sold a gun to him.

“Based on the confession of another suspect, Okoro Desmond, who stated that he sold a gun to Israel Onojeruo, the suspects were arrested and later transferred to the State Anti Cult Unit for further investigation,” the police said.

However, following the extortion allegation, the Commissioner of Police was said to have acted swiftly.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Aina Adesola, listened to the complaint and took immediate action by ordering the AC X Squad to investigate the allegation levelled against the officers,” the statement added.

The command confirmed that the constable identified as Bright in the video has been detained at the state headquarters, while the Jesse DPO has been removed from his post and redeployed to the command headquarters pending the outcome of the investigation.

“The removal of the DPO is in response to a series of complaints of extortion and unprofessionalism levelled against him from different quarters,” SP Bright said.

The police leadership assured the public that the investigation would be thorough and transparent, warning that any officer found culpable would face the full weight of the law.

“If, after investigation, the officers are found to have acted in an unprofessional manner, they will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the extant laws as stipulated in the Police Act and regulations to serve as a deterrent to others,” the statement said.

CP Adesola also reiterated his stance against misconduct within the command.

“The command under my leadership will not tolerate any form of extortion, intimidation, incivility to members of the public or unprofessionalism from officers,” he said.

Members of the public were urged to report complaints against police officers through the Command Complaint Response Unit via the dedicated phone lines: 09011112311, 09155570008, 09064308018 and 09066575187.
