Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has rejected calls for him to apologise to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, after sharing a document purporting to be the governor’s West African Examinations Council result.
Davido said he had done nothing wrong and insisted that his decision to publish the alleged result was intended to draw attention to the academic record of the governor after Okpebholo mocked his uncle, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke.
“I’m not going to apologise. I didn’t do anything wrong. I was just telling people of the state the results their governor has,” Davido said in an interview with News Central on Tuesday in Osun State.
The latest development marks a further escalation of a political feud that began during the build-up to the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
Okpebholo had criticised Adeleke during campaign activities in Osun, questioning the governor’s leadership and repeatedly mocking his penchant for dancing at public events.
The Edo governor was campaigning for the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, in the election.
Davido, who is Adeleke’s nephew and had openly campaigned for his uncle, responded by posting on Instagram what appeared to be Okpebholo’s WAEC result.
The document circulated widely online and purportedly showed several low grades, including D7 in some subjects.
The controversy intensified after legal practitioner and author, Timothy Tugbiyele, called on Davido to apologise.
Tugbiyele described the publication as inappropriate and argued that a poor examination result, even if genuine, should not be used to ridicule a person.
He also said Adeleke should have responded to Okpebholo through official political channels rather than allowing Davido to engage the governor personally. L
Davido has now made clear that he has no intention of taking that advice.
In his latest interview, the singer accused Okpebholo of travelling from Edo to Osun to attack his uncle politically. He also criticised the governor over the state of a road leading to the Edo Government House and questioned his electoral mandate.
“You were not even elected; you were selected,” Davido said, while also warning that Adeleke would return the political challenge when Okpebholo seeks re-election. L
The timing has given the dispute added political significance. Adeleke has since won the Osun governorship election, defeating Oyebamiji of the APC by 511,067 votes to 444,815, according to results reported from the Independent National Electoral Commission’s declaration.
The victory secured Adeleke a second term in office.
Davido had remained deeply involved in the campaign and continued posting political messages as votes were counted.
Following Adeleke’s victory, he declared that the result represented a defeat for the political forces opposing his uncle.
