Gombe State governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, has expressed regret over yesterday’s tragic incident in Gombe, the state capital, which led to the death of 10 persons, including nine members of the Boys Brigade.

No fewer than 30 persons were also injured in the incident which occurred when the driver of a bus rammed into a procession of Easter revellers along Gombe-Biu road.

The governor in a Twitter post expressed sadness over the incident and assured the victims’ families of justice.

The post read: “I’m deeply saddened over the death of Nine Boys Brigade members and one other person at Alheri Junction, Biu Road Gombe. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased. I assure everyone that we have taken all necessary measures in ensuring that justice is done.”

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has also ordered a speedy and comprehensive investigation into the tragic incident.

Adamu, while condoling the families and friends of the dead and the injured victims, advised motorists to exercise utmost caution by obeying all traffic signs, rules and regulations while driving especially this festive period and beyond.

Police said that the accident occurred after the driver lost control of the vehicle at Unguwan waja and rammed into a crowd evidently celebrating Easter.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, “the victims were immediately rushed to Gombe Specialist Hospital where the driver, one Corp Assistant Adamu Abdullahi, a staff of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) attached to Government House Gombe and 10 others were confirmed dead and their bodies deposited at the morgue while thirty 30 other persons injured are currently receiving treatment.”

The Boys’ Brigade were reportedly from ECWA Church from Bamusa, Barunde and from St Peter’s Anglican Church, Madaki.

The procession took place around 11.30pm.

They were on procession to Sabon-Layi Area of Gombe Metropolis where they were expected to celebrate Easter on today.
