Dangote Group Responds to Accident Victim after 6 Days Following Intense Campaign by Phyna

After nearly a week of sustained online outrage led by former Big Brother Naija winner, Josephina “Phyna” Otabor, Dangote Group has finally pledged medical and financial support to her younger sister, Ruth Otabor, who was critically injured in an accident involving one of the company’s trucks in Auchi, Edo State.

The company, in a statement posted on its social media platforms yesterday, said senior officials from Dangote Cement Plc, alongside its insurance team, had visited the scene, engaged law enforcement, and met with the victim’s family at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital.

Dangote Group promised comprehensive medical care, appropriate compensation, and adherence to its welfare policy, wishing Ruth a full and speedy recovery.

The pledge comes six days after the accident, during which Ruth—who had just graduated—lost one of her legs, with the other reportedly at risk.

The incident triggered a massive online campaign spearheaded by Phyna, who accused the truck driver of operating without a valid licence and faulted Dangote’s local management for failing to visit the hospital promptly.

“They have responded to us ooo. Thank you Nigerians. Thank you Phynation,” Phyna wrote in a post on X late last night, confirming the company’s response.

In the days leading up to Dangote Group’s statement, Phyna’s call for justice drew the attention of celebrities, including actress Kate Henshaw, who alleged that the truck driver initially fled the scene and that the vehicle’s licence plate had been removed.

Henshaw also claimed police were preventing the victim’s family and students from accessing the truck, while urging the authorities to ensure accountability.

The online movement, marked by hashtags like #JusticeForRuth, also saw fans and sympathisers contribute donations to cover mounting medical costs before Dangote Group’s intervention.
