The family of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Josephine Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has been thrown into mourning following the death of her younger sister, Ruth Otabor, who was crushed by a truck belonging to Dangote Cement in Edo State.
Ruth, a recent graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, was hit by the truck near the school premises on August 13, 2025. She initially underwent an amputation of one leg in a bid to save her life, but tragically succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at about 6:30 a.m.
The Otabor family, through their lawyer, Eko Solicitors and Advocates, confirmed the development in a statement signed by Justice Segun Ojienoh. The statement, also shared by Phyna on her social media pages, reads in part: “With a heavy heart, the family regrets to announce the passing on to glory of their daughter, sister, and mother. The family is presently grieving and will appreciate being given a private moment to mourn the departed. Funeral arrangements will be communicated to the public in due course.”
Ruth’s death has sparked widespread sympathy online, with fans and colleagues rallying around Phyna in her moment of grief.
The tragedy has also renewed conversations around the frequency of fatal accidents involving trucks belonging to Dangote Cement across Nigeria.

The rate at which dangote truck kill people is becoming too much,a lot of them are in the hospital battling with their lives. I think their driver’s are unskilled, and most of them doesn’t know how to drive. May Almighty God grant her eternal rest, forgive her shortcomings. Strengthen and comfort the family left behind. It’s so sad
