Cubana Chief Priest’s Naira Nightmare: EFCC Explains Shocking ₦10 Million Fine, Mandatory Social Media Public Service

Segun Atanda/

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained the rationale behind the sensational courtroom drama in which a flamboyant socialite Okechukwu Pascal, aka Cubana Chief Priest, was slapped with a ₦10 million fine for his extravagant abuse of Naira notes that should attract a penalty of N50,000.

Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Federal High Court in Lagos delivered the stunning judgment, highlighting the hefty penalty imposed by the EFCC, after which Cubana Chief Priest stormed Davido and Chioma’s traditional wedding in Lagos.

Despite the offense usually carrying a mere ₦50,000 fine, the EFCC, invoking Section 14(2) of its Establishment Act, sought a severe punishment to make an example of the celebrity.

According to EFCC, the judgment stemmed from the its commitment to cracking down on naira abuse and ensuring the sanctity of Nigeria’s currency.

But the punishment doesn’t end with the hefty fine. In a move to publicly humiliate and deter future misconduct, the court has mandated that Cubana Chief Priest must lead a rigorous campaign against naira abuse. He is required to post at least two videos every two months on his social media platforms, advocating against the misuse of Nigeria’s legal tender. This social media shaming is aimed at ensuring he never forgets his misdeeds and serves as a stark warning to others.

Cubana Chief Priest’s lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, SAN, had petitioned for a lesser punishment under the EFCC Act. Still, the court’s ruling exceeded expectations, emphasizing the importance of upholding Nigeria’s financial laws.

In a statement issued today, EFCC says its Special Task Force against Naira Abuse and Dollarisation remains undeterred in its mission, adding that the landmark judgment is expected to heighten public awareness and encourage Nigerians to respect the naira.

NewsmakersNG will keep you updated as Cubana Chief Priest embarks on his social media mea culpa, under the watchful eyes of both the court and his millions of followers.
