Commissioner of Police (CP) Edward Ajogun has raised the alarm over increasing number of fake lawyers in Ogun State.

Following the arrest of a suspected fake lawyer identified as 47-year-old Tajudeen Olufemi Idris, Ajogun, in a statement issued by Ogun State police spokesman DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, revealed that no fewer than five fake lawyers have been arrested in the last two months.

Idris was arrested on Friday while appearing for a counsel in a case at a Magistrate Court in Ifo local government area of Ogun.

According to Ajogun, the fake lawyers swindled people of their hard-earned money.

He gave a list of the fake lawyers arrested.

According to him, on August 12, 2020, a 56-year-old Sylvester Ogbagu was arrested at Shagamu while parading himself as a lawyer.

Another person, Adedeji Ebenezer, was apprehended in the court premises at Itori on August 5, 2020 while falsely appearing for a client as a lawyer.

He said that Ebenezer was tried and subsequently sentenced to three years imprisonment.

Another fake lawyer, Elijah Ayodeji Ojo, was also arrested by officers at Ajuwon Police Station on June 28 when he came to solicit for a so-called client who was having a criminal matter with the police.

Also, one Lawrence Oyedunu was arrested in Sango Ota while presenting himself as a counsel to a suspect.

Expressing concern, the CP called on the state branch of NBA to put necessary machinery in motion to checkmate the activities of fraudulent people.

He also appealed to those who might wish to be lawyers to take a cue from the determined effort of a traditional ruler in the state, the Towulade of Akinale, who at 75 years read Law and went to Law School because of his interest in the legal profession.
