A five-hectare rice farm in Ilupeju Ibaro Village, Abeokuta, Ogun State, was devastated by a herd of cows on January 17, 2025.
According to Okegbenro Julius of the Favour Community Development Association, herdsmen drove a large number of cows onto his farm at approximately 6pm, resulting in severe destruction to the crops.
A security guard on the farm recorded the incident on video, but when the herdsmen realised they were being observed, they quickly fled, taking most of their cows with them. One cow was left behind and detained.
In response to the incident, local police have initiated measures to maintain peace and prevent further conflicts between farmers and herders.
These steps include increased patrols in the area and engagement with community leaders to address the underlying issues contributing to such incidents.
However, the police have not reported any arrests related to the incident, and it remains unclear who will be held responsible for the damages incurred.
The lack of clarity on accountability raises concerns among farmers about the protection of their assets and the enforcement of existing laws against such trespassing.
