Details have emerged on how a Nigerian medical doctor based in the United States lost the battle for his life at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) in Yaba, Lagos, where he was being treated for Covid-19.
NewsmakersNG’s investigations revealed that the late Doctor Nkem Gbemudu flew to Nigeria with the body of his uncle who died in the U.S. and the funeral was held in the country.
Dr Gbemudu later fell ill and family members thought it was malaria.
He was taken to hospitals in Eastern Nigeria from where he was flown to Lagos on December 26, 2020 and taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) where a ventilator was not available for him.
He was later rushed to two private hospitals that could not admit him because the wards were filled up with patients.
According to his friends and family members, 60-year-old Dr Gbemudu died on New Year Eve.
Gbemudu who left two children of 16 and 14 years, passed through UNILAG Medical School several years back.
