The federal government has announced plans to enforce total lockdown in 18 local government areas, which account for 60 percent of COVID-19 cases in the country.

It said the move became necessary to contain the spread of the pandemic.

Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, made the disclosure to journalists after members of the task force met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, today.

Mustapha, who is also the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said the local government areas are responsible for at least 60 per cent of the total number of cases across the country.

According to the SGF, Nigeria has not reached its peak, hence, the number of infections will continue to rise.

He therefore enjoined all citizens to continue to comply with all the prescribed non-pharmaceutical interventions to contain the spread of the disease.

Non-pharmaceutical interventions include use of face mask, regular washing of hands and physical distancing.
