COVID-19 Cure: NCDC Reacts to Trending Video, Advises Against Non-clinical Use of Hydroxychloroquine

Pat Stevens/

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reacted to a trending video of a group of US doctors, who claimed to have found a cure for COVID-19.

A part of the video, which has gone viral, features a Nigerian-born, American-based physician, Dr Stella Immanuel, who claimed to have recorded a 100 per cent success rate in the treatment of over 300 COVID-19 using hydroxychloroquine.

She claims to have used Hydroxychloroquine alongside Zithromax and Zinc to treat the patients, all of whom recovered without any side effects.

The video was first published by Breitbart News, a right-wing medium co-founded by Steve Bannon, a former aide to American President, Donald Trump.

In the video, which was shot in front of the United States Supreme Court, Dr Immanuel is seen with seven others wearing white lab coats calling themselves “America’s Frontline Doctors” and addressing the press.

President Trump, who is up for reelection in November, shared multiple versions of the video with his 84 million Twitter followers yesterday night.

While not making specific reference to the video, the NCDC reminded Nigerians, in a series of tweets this afternoon, that there is still no certified cure for COVID-19.

It observed that some trial drugs have shown “promising results but are yet to be validated for use”.

It added that in Nigeria, “use of hydroxychloroquine is only limited to clinical trials”.

The NCDC also shared a 22 seconds video of its Director General, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, advising the public to avoid “casual” or non-clinical use of hydroxychloroquine.
