The National Industrial Court sitting in Lagos is set to deliver judgment in a suit filed by legal practitioner, Ikemefuna Stephen Nwoye, against prominent law firm, Aluko & Oyebode, over allegations bordering on the breach of a settlement agreement arising from a tax-related dispute.
The case, Suit No. NICN/LA/180/2020, is scheduled for judgment on May 4, 2026 before Justice Elizabeth A. Oji at the Lagos Division of the National Industrial Court, Court 7.
The dispute reportedly stems from professional engagements connected to Capital Gains Tax and Stamp Duty matters, which later developed into a disagreement over the implementation of an alleged settlement agreement reached between the parties.
At the centre of the litigation is whether the terms of the settlement, intended to resolve the underlying professional and tax advisory issues, were properly fulfilled or breached, leading to the present court action.
Court filings indicate that the claimant, Ikemefuna Stephen Nwoye, is asking the court to determine issues relating to the enforcement of the agreement and alleged non-compliance, while the defendant, Aluko & Oyebode, is contesting the claims.
The matter has attracted attention within legal and commercial circles due to the involvement of a leading commercial law firm and the technical nature of the underlying subject, which relates to tax advisory services involving statutory obligations under Capital Gains Tax and Stamp Duty frameworks.
Observers say the judgment could provide further clarity on how Nigerian courts interpret and enforce settlement agreements arising from professional service disputes, particularly within complex advisory relationships involving tax compliance matters.
As the court prepares to deliver its decision, stakeholders in the legal profession are expected to closely watch the outcome for its potential implications on contractual certainty, professional accountability, and dispute resolution practices in Nigeria’s legal and tax advisory sectors.
