Court documents have revealed that the Minister of Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, forged the degree certificate he submitted for his ministerial appointment.

According to filings before Justice Hauwa Yilwa of the Federal High Court, Abuja, Mr. Nnaji admitted under oath that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), never issued him any degree certificate.

The revelation validates an earlier investigation by Premium Times, which found that both the degree and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates he presented to the Nigerian government were forged.

In the affidavit supporting his suit against the Minister of Education, the National Universities Commission, UNN, and some of its officials, Nnaji stated that he was admitted to study Microbiology/Biochemistry in 1981 and “graduated” in 1985, but that the university had not issued him a certificate due to what he called the “non-cooperative attitude” of its officials.

However, subsequent correspondence from UNN contradicted his claims.

The institution, through its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simon Ortuanya, confirmed in an October 2025 letter to Premium Times that Nnaji did not complete his studies and was never awarded any degree by the university.

By admitting that UNN never issued him a certificate, Nnaji has effectively confirmed that the degree and NYSC documents he submitted to President Bola Tinubu and the Senate in 2023 were forged.

Despite several attempts, the minister has declined to comment on the revelations.
