Coronavirus: Why We’ve Not Fumigated Oyo Markets – Makinde

Ololade Adeyanju/

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has explained why the state government is yet to fumigate markets and other public spaces as advised by the state’s epidemiologist.

Giving updates on his government’s efforts to combat the spread of the disease via his Twitter handle, @seyimakinde, the governor said such an exercise would only be necessary if there is a “sustained community transmission of the virus”.

“In response to enquiries as to why we have not fumigated markets; based on advice from the state’s epidemiologist, Dr Femi Akinyode, market fumigation will only be necessary in the event of sustained community transmission of the virus,” Makinde tweeted.

He noted that the state government had, notwithstanding, adopted several measures to guide against the possibility of local transmission of the disease.

“However, a market sensitization programme using mobile public address system with customised platforms, and provision of hand washing equipment and hand sanitizers are ongoing,” the governor disclosed.

Makinde also highlighted other efforts of his government to curtail the spread of coronavirus in the state.
