Lagos State government has disclosed that it was currently monitoring over 1,300 persons to ascertain they have not been infected with coronavirus.
The disclosure followed the announcement by commissioner for health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, that the local transmission of coronavirus has been recorded in the state.
The state government, earlier today, anmounced four new confirmed cases including a Nigerian male in his 50s, who has never travelled outside the country.
Only yesterday, minister of health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, affirmed that Nigeria only has imported cases of the virus and no community (local) transmission, hence, more focus would be placed on surveillance of air and land borders.
Abayomi, tweeted this evening that the state executive council was meeting on how to tackle the latest development.
Abayomi tweeted, “More #COVID19Lagos Updates
“The index case has cleared the virus and will be tested one more time. If negative, he will be discharged.
“It is clear that we have a combination of imported cases and local transmission in Lagos now.
“The Lagos State executive is meeting various groups to decide on next steps which will include social distancing to slow down the outbreak thereby preventing the opportunity of the virus to move from person to person.
The Lagos State government later tweeted via @followlasg, that it was following over 1,300 persons and the number is increasing.
The tweet reads, “Currently, we are following over 1,300 people right now to find information about the state of their health and the number is increasing.
“We are running more test on suspected persons and contacts of confirmed cases.
“We are appealing to everyone that were on these two airlines – Turkish flight of 14th of March, 2020 TK1830 and Lufthansa Flight of 13th of March, 2020 LH568 to self isolate and contact Lagos State Ministry of Health on 08000CORONA.”
