The punishment stipulated by law for having sex with a girl under the age of 13, under whatever circumstance, is life imprisonment, the police have revealed.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, who disclosed this in a tweet via his personal handle, it is immaterial whether the act was carried with the consent of the girl or not.
Edafe said the law categorises such an act as defilement and clearly stipulates the punishment for anyone found guilty of engaging in it.
He further disclosed that attempting to have sex with a girl within the same age bracket without success also attracts 14 years jail term when found guilty.
His tweet reads, “Do you know that having sex with a girl below the age of 13 is called defilement, her consent is immaterial and if proven guilty, the punishment is life imprisonment and even an attempt alone is 14 yrs imprisonment? If you don’t know, know now.”
