Officers at Zone 2 Police Headquarters in Lagos have been commended for achieving professional excellence in the observation of human rights and keeping their cells neat.

The commendation came after a surprise visit by the Committee on Cell Visitation led by Chief Magistrate Adedamola Albert Paul. In his entourage were Mr. Ifeanyi Okeke from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and Mrs. Grace Adenubi from Legal Aid Council.

According to a statement from the Zone ‘2’ police spokesperson, DSP Hauwa Idris Adamu, the Committee visited Zone 2 Command Cell at about 1000hrs yesterday.

She stated: “Upon their arrival, they visited the cell in company with the O/C Legal, Zone 2 Command CSP Paul Idenyen, where they met only one Armed Robbery suspect in detention.

“The suspect was interviewed as to when he was arrested, what was his offence, if he was told his offence or not while the suspect answered yes, that he was told his offence, duly cautioned before he volunteered his statement and was subsequently detained.

“The Assistant Inspector General of Police in-charge of Zone 2 Command, AIG Ahmed Iliyasu, psc(+) who was on routine check to the cell in retinue of other senior officers in the Command met the delegation in the cell in the process.

“The delegation later visited the AIG in his Office after the cell visit where they applauded the Zone for keeping the cell very neat and well ventilated; they also commended the AIG for Professionalism in the discharge of duty.

“The AIG in his response complimented the Committee of Cell Visitation set up by the Judiciary which he addressed as a critical partner in the Administration of Criminal Justice and reiterated his commitment to respect for the Rule of Law and Human Rights by officers and men of the Zone.

“The cell visitation which was impromptu ended amidst group photographs.”
