Collapsed Building: Mother, Child among 8 People Confirmed Dead

Eight persons have been confirmed dead in the collapse of a 3-Storey building last night at 32 Ibadan Street, Ebute Metta, Lagos.

This included a mother and her adult child identified as David, who was between 28 and 29 years old, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The building before it collapsed.

According to reports, the building caved in at about 11pm yesterday trapping an unspecified number of occupants.

NewsmakersNG learned that no fewer than 23 persons have been rescued amid efforts by first responders to salvage the situation.

Meanwhile, another three-story building, about 200 meters away from the current one is said to have shown signs of distress with parts throwing pebbles and falling off.

The building had also been marked as distressed but the occupants were defiant.

However, the building has been resealed and occupants evacuated by officers of LAGOS State Buildings Control Agency (LABSCA)

Giving the situation report, General Manager LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said, “On arrival at the scene of the incident, an old three-story building was discovered to have collapsed.

“Further information gathered revealed that the incident occurred at about 10.56pm. with a yet to be determined number of people trapped.

“Search-and-rescue operations are ongoing.”
