The oft-repeated admonition by the police for members of the public to be always vigilant and promptly report suspicious events may have paid off, as it has led to the rescue of a dying armed robbery victim and the arrest of one of his suspected attackers, in Ogun State, on Friday.
Anti-robbery operatives, attached to the Sango Ota division of the Ogun State Police Command, were able to prevent one Umani Ndidi from bleeding to death from gunshot wounds, after an unidentified man alerted them to his predicament.
According to the spokesman of the command, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, a man (name withheld) had alerted the police by telephone that a victim was being attacked by two suspected armed robbers on Owode-Ijoko road, following which the divisional police officer, SP Akinsola Ogunwale, mobilised his men to the scene.
Police also succeeded in arresting one of the suspects, a 25-year-old man, Abey Tunde, from whom a locally-made pistol with two live cartridges were recovered.
Abimbola said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ahmed Iliyasu, had given marching orders to detectives to arrest the suspect’s fleeing accomplice.
Iliyasu also commended the patriotism of the citizen that alerted the police to the crime.
