Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, prompting the match to be abandoned in distressing scenes in Odense.
The 34-year-old midfielder fell to the ground midway through the second half after appearing to clutch his chest, immediately triggering medical intervention from both team and stadium staff.
Players from Denmark and Ukraine quickly formed a protective circle around Eriksen as emergency treatment was administered, while fans inside the stadium watched in shock.
According to the Danish Football Association (DBU), Eriksen was conscious shortly after the incident and was described as “doing well under the circumstances”.
The match was officially called off on medical grounds.
Stadium screens relayed updates to spectators, confirming that the game had been stopped and that the player was receiving care.
Supporters responded by chanting Eriksen’s name and applauding the medical teams.
Team doctor, Morten Boesen, who also treated Eriksen during his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, later confirmed that the midfielder had briefly lost consciousness but recovered quickly.
He added that Eriksen was able to walk off the pitch and was taken to hospital for further assessment.
Boesen also indicated that Eriksen’s implantable cardioverter defibrillator, fitted after his Euro 2020 collapse, functioned as expected during the incident.
The Danish FA said further examinations would be carried out to determine the cause of the episode.
Eriksen’s collapse inevitably revived memories of his cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland in 2021, when he required emergency resuscitation on the pitch before being stabilised in hospital.
Despite that incident, Eriksen returned to top-level football and has since been a regular figure for Denmark, earning more than 140 international caps.
Further updates on his condition are expected from the Danish Football Association and hospital officials.
