In response to the cholera outbreak in Lagos and Ogun States, the Society of Testing Laboratory Analysts of Nigeria (SoTLAN) has called on the government to commission Public Analysts for comprehensive water quality testing in the affected areas.

The outbreak, which has resulted in multiple fatalities, underscores the critical need for immediate intervention to safeguard public health.

Cholera, a severe diarrheal disease caused by the consumption of contaminated food or water, has been spreading due to inadequate public awareness of its causes and prevention measures. To combat this, SoTLAN emphasizes the necessity of thorough testing of water sources, including wells, boreholes, and municipal supplies, to identify and mitigate contamination.

Under the IPAN Act Cap.I 16 LFN 2004, Public Analysts are the only professionals authorized to perform water and food testing to ensure their safety.

SoTLAN insists that mobilizing these experts is vital to guide the necessary remedial measures, such as disinfection and the provision of safe drinking water.

Immediate Actions Urged by SoTLAN:

1. Commission Public Analysts: Officially engage qualified Public Analysts to conduct urgent water quality testing in the affected areas.
2. Facilitate Collaboration: Ensure coordinated efforts between the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Water Resources, and Public Analysts for an effective response.
3. Public Communication: Keep the public informed about ongoing efforts and provide clear guidance on protective measures during the outbreak.

SoTLAN also urged residents to take precautions, such as boiling water before use, practicing good hygiene, thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables, and using water from safe sources only. Immediate medical attention is recommended for anyone experiencing cholera symptoms, including severe nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.

According to SoTLAN President, Prof. Olugbenga Ogunmoyela, the Society remains committed to supporting the government in addressing this public health crisis swiftly and effectively. He said that by acting promptly to commission Licensed Public Analysts and implement necessary measures, the authorities could help contain the outbreak and prevent future occurrences.
