The Central Bank of Nigeria has issued a strong public warning over the circulation of fraudulent messages, emails and online communications falsely claiming to originate from or be associated with the Bank.
In a press release published on its official website, the apex bank said the deceptive communications are designed to mislead members of the public, encourage them to click malicious links, and in some cases harvest personal and financial information for criminal use.
The Bank noted that the fake messages often contain false claims about its leadership, licensing decisions and policy matters, all aimed at creating confusion and facilitating cyber fraud.
It stressed that its official website remains www.cbn.gov.ng, urging Nigerians to rely only on verified communication channels for accurate information.
The CBN advised the public to take precautionary steps, including avoiding suspicious links, refraining from sharing personal or banking details on unverified platforms, and confirming all official communications through recognised media outlets or the Bank’s verified platforms.
It also encouraged members of the public to report suspected fraudulent websites, emails or messages to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.
Reaffirming its position, the Bank said it remains fully committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s financial system and is strengthening its cybersecurity framework in collaboration with relevant agencies to combat evolving digital threats.
