The Federal Government has unveiled a detailed programme for the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London, announcing a State Funeral beginning with the arrival of his remains in Katsina on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the announcement on Monday in Abuja, outlining a solemn week of national mourning declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to honour the late Nigerian leader. The mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13, includes the flying of flags at half-mast across the country and a public holiday on Tuesday, July 15.
“President Tinubu has approved a coordinated State Burial, and constituted an Inter-Ministerial Committee chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume,” Idris said.
According to the minister, a Federal Government delegation led by Vice-President Kashim Shettima is currently in London finalizing logistics for the repatriation of Buhari’s remains. The body is expected to arrive at Katsina Airport by 12 noon on Tuesday, where it will be received personally by President Tinubu during a brief military ceremony.
Following the airport reception, the remains will be transported to Daura for the Jana’iza (Islamic funeral prayer) and interment at the former President’s residence.
A total of 25 Federal Executive Council (FEC) members have been directed to travel to Katsina to participate in the burial rites and attend the Third-Day Prayers scheduled for Wednesday, July 16, in Daura.
As part of the tribute, condolence registers have been opened in all federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, and at Nigerian Embassies and Missions around the world.
The minister noted that world leaders have continued to send condolence messages, reflecting Buhari’s global influence and legacy.
In respect of the mourning period, the Federal Executive Council meeting earlier slated for Tuesday has been rescheduled to Friday, July 18, 2025.
President Tinubu urged Nigerians to join in prayers and reflection as the nation bids farewell to “one of its foremost statesmen.”
