Nigeria stood up to be counted among 128 countries that defied President Donald Trump on Thursday and voted in favour of a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for the United States to withdraw its decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Trump had threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that voted in favour. His warning did appear to have some impact with nine countries voting against the resolution and 35 abstaining.
Nigeria has been on the Top Ten list of countries receiving huge aids from the United States (US).
President Trump had announced during the Group of 20 Summit in Germany, on July 8, to give Nigeria and three other countries $630million in aid. The other countries are Yemen, Somalia, and South Sudan.
According to US authorities, the aid would assist such countries where conflict has led to the world’s largest humanitarian crisis in more than 70 years.
Other African countries among the 128 who voted for the resolution are: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, DR Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Zambia, and Zimbabwe among others.
These countries and Russia were united in voting to the chagrin of US authorities who later vowed not to ever forget how every country voted.
