Several persons, including an unidentified journalist, have been shot as members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, otherwise known as Shi’ites, embarked on another protest in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory today.
NewsmakersNG learnt that the protest is concentrated around the Federal Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the protesters are engaging the police in a fierce battle.
Reports say the Shi’ites attempted to force their way into the premises of the foreign affairs ministry but were repelled by security forces.
They however resorted to burning down a vehicle belonging to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) parked beside the ministry.
Eyewitnesses also reported hearing gunshots in the vicinity of the Eagle Square, both on Shehu Shagari Way as well as Ahmadu Bello Way.
Reports say the roads in the areas affected by the clashes have been deserted by motorists and workers.
