Scores of worshippers, including pregnant women and children, have reportedly died in a stampede at a free food distribution programme organised by a new generation church in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, today.

The event, tagged: ‘Shop for free,’ was organised by Kings Assemblies at the expansive grounds of Port Harcourt Polo Club.

NewsmakersNG learnt that the crowd overstretched the venue as the church had invited members of the public to come and receive gift items and food for its fourth anniversary.

An eyewitness said people have started
arriving the venue since yesterday evening, while others arrived as early as 6.30am today for the event was billed to start by 9am.

He said most of the victims were taken to the nearby Military Hospital.

Police authorities in the state have confirmed the incident but said they could not yet ascertain the number of casualties.
