A resident was reportedly killed and a police station set ablaze in Isan-Ekiti, Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State, following a violent disturbance that erupted a few hours before Saturday’s governorship election.

Videos and eyewitness accounts circulating on social media showed a building identified as a police facility engulfed in flames as residents fled the area amid panic.

In the footage obtained by Newsmakerslive.org, several residents could be seen surrounding the police station, with parts of the building already engulfed in flames.

Some individuals were also seen vandalising sections of the facility, damaging property and pulling down structures as the unrest escalated.

The circumstances surrounding the violence remained unclear as of press time, with conflicting accounts emerging from the community and no official statement yet issued by the police authorities.

One resident, reacting to the incident on social media, alleged that the crisis began after an altercation involving a man and police officers.

“There was arguments between that guy friend and police that results to that guy killing,” the resident wrote.

Another resident described a chaotic situation in the town, claiming that security agents deployed tear gas in an effort to restore order.

“May the soul of the young innocent boy rest in peace. Teargas everywhere at Isan now,” the resident stated.

Newsmakerslive.org could not independently verify either account.

The violence comes against the backdrop of heightened political tension ahead of the Ekiti State governorship election scheduled for Saturday.

The poll is expected to attract significant attention as voters across the state head to the ballot to choose their next governor.

Efforts to obtain confirmation from the Ekiti State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

Residents said security presence had been increased in parts of the community following the unrest, although the full extent of casualties and property damage remained uncertain.

Authorities are expected to provide further details as investigations continue.
