Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health reasons.
In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, the former Jigawa State governor formally announced his decision to step down, bringing to an end his tenure 15 months after joining the federal cabinet.
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that President Tinubu has accepted Badaru’s resignation and expressed appreciation for his service to the nation, particularly his contributions to national security and public administration.
The President is expected to notify the Senate of a replacement later in the week.
Badaru, 63, served as governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023 at the start of the Tinubu administration.
His resignation comes at a critical time, as President Tinubu recently declared a nationwide security emergency and the government prepares to roll out additional measures aimed at strengthening defence operations across the country.
Further details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
