Nigerian Government has agreed to form a joint patrol team alongside Benin and Niger republics to set up a date for the opening of the country’s land borders.
The agreement was reached at the meeting of a Tripartite Anti-Smuggling Committee of the three countries on border closure held in Abuja.
According to the communique issued at the close of the meeting, which is currently being read by Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Goeffrey Onyeama, the committee agreed to put in place certain mechanisms that would lead to the reopening of the border.
According to Onyeama, the committee had reached “a consensus on mechanisms towards the reopening of the land borders”.
