An operative of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) narrowly escaped death today after he was lynched by a mob at Ijegun, in Alimosho local government area of Lagos.

The mob also reportedly clashed with some policemen who attempted to rescue their colleague.

Eyewitnesses told NewsmakersNG that a mob had seized the policeman after some SARS operatives who were chasing a suspected criminal shot dead a shop owner, identified as Biliki.

NewsmakersNG learnt that the development prompted the policemen to call for reinforcement in order to prevent the situation from further degenerating.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, told NewsmakersNG he was yet to be fully briefed about the situation, as the policemen on ground were still busy restoring normalcy in the affected area.

“I am yet to be fully briefed about the incident. I have been trying to reach our men on ground but they are still busy trying to restore order. As you know, saving lives is our primary objective. It after normalcy is restored that I can get a proper brief of the situation,” Elkana said.

He also said he could not confirm if the affected policeman was still alive or dead.
