Emotions could not be contained today as Hon Umar Mohammed Bago (PDP) openly shed tears when it was becoming clear during vote counting that his opponent, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila (APC), was emerging as the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives.
Supporters of Gbajabiamila went into wild jubilation as more and more ballots came their way inside the Green Chamber.
Fifty-six-year-old Gbajabiamila, who was nominated by Hon Jibrin Abdulmumin, was eventually declared the winner with 281 votes against Bago’s 76.
According to the Clerk of the House, Mohammed Sanni-Omolori, 358 members voted. He said that there was one invalid vote, as well as two absentees.
Gbajabiamila’s running mate, Hon. Ahmed Wase, was returned unopposed after his opponent backed out at the last minute.
