Renowned investigative journalist and founder of Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Fisayo Soyombo, has been released from custody by the Nigerian Army following a wave of public and media outcry.
FIJ has refuted the Army’s claim that Soyombo was involved in “illegal oil bunkering,” calling it a deliberate mischaracterisation.
The organisation has pledged to address these allegations comprehensively in due course.
FIJ expressed immediate concerns over Soyombo’s safety, noting that during his detention, the Army gained access to sensitive information related to his fieldwork.
“We are assessing the situation and hoping that his safety will not be jeopardised after release,” the organisation said in a statement.
Soyombo’s detention and subsequent release have reignited conversations about press freedom and the risks faced by journalists in Nigeria.
