The lawmaker representing Lagelu/Akinyele federal constituency of Oyo State, Temitope Olatoye (aka Sugar), has been shot dead, as suspected political thugs engage in violent clashes in parts of Ibadan, the state capital.

NewsmakersNG learnt that Sugar, who was also the Oyo Central senatorial district candidate of the Action Democratic Party in the National Assembly election was attaked on his way from his village, Elesu, where he had gone to vote.

He was reportedly hit in the eye and was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, where he died.

The Public Relations Officer of UCH, Mr Toye Akinrinlola, confirmed his death to newsmen.

Akinrinlola said Olatoye died in hospital’s Intensive Care Unit from gunshots wound.

“The AIG Police, Zone 7, the Oyo Commissioner of Police, CMD and other top police hierarchy are in UCH now.

“We have formally told the family of his demise,’’ Akinrinlola said.

Olatoye lost the February 23 senatorial elections to Senator Teslim Folarin of the All Progressives Congress.

Reports say the area most affected by the violence is the Lalupon Iyana church axis.

Some residents told NewsmakersNG that the violence which broke out around 6pm is yet to abate with sporadic gunshots pervading the entire area.
