Matilda Omonaiye/

An unidentified commercial driver committed suicide today in Lagos by jumping into the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge.

Eyewitnesses say the man parked his loaded vehicle on the bridge, got out and plunged into the lagoon before any of the passengers could react.

Efforts to save the victim by men of the Marine Police and local divers proved abortive.

The rescue operation

His corpse was recovered and taken to the Ebute Ero police division from where it was transferred to the morgue.

A tweet of the incident on the Twitter handle of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State police command, @rrslagos767, reads:

“A man has jumped into the Lagoon from 3rd Mainland Bridge. RRS riders got to the scene almost immediately and radioed for assistance from the Marine Police, LASG rescue Boats & local divers who recovered the corpse . The remains have been taken to Ebute Ero division.”
