The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Ola Rosanla, a pregnant policewoman and two other policemen were reportedly killed as unknown gunmen attacked the Agudama Ekpetiama police station in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State in the early hours of today.

The pregnant policewoman, identified as Joy Wellington, was reportedly shot dead where she was hiding in one of the offices.

The attackers also reportedly raided the station’s armoury and carted away arms and ammunition, as well as the uniforms of the deceased policemen in an operation that lasted nearly two hours.

The attack was reportedly carried out about 2.15am.

NewsmakersNG learnt that one policeman escaped, while another, who was shot on the leg survived the attack.

Suspected cultists also attacked the Otoko police station in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State this afternoon and carted away an undisclosed number of firearms.

NewsmakersNG learnt that the hoodlums who attacked the Imo police station also set the station on fire after sacking the policemen on duty.

Sources told NewsmakersNG that the incident occurred at about 3 pm.

The state commissioner of Police, Rabiu Ladodo, confirmed the attack but did not give details.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered a manhunt for the perpetrators of the Bayelsa attack, which also left two policemen injured.

He also ordered the immediate deployment of crack detectives from the IGP Intelligence Response Unit, the Forensic and Homicide sections of the Force Criminal Investigations Department and the Marine Police Department in Yenagoa to complement the efforts of the state command in carrying out a discrete investigation into the incident.

The Force spokesman, DCP Frank Mba, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja, assuring that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

The IGP, while paying tribute to the fallen heroes, condoled with their families, describing the incident as “a classic example of the risk and sacrifices the police are exposed to in their daily task of protecting our homeland”.

He also urged the Agudama Ekpetiama community and the entire people of Bayelsa State to avail the police with credible information that could help in apprehending the criminals.
