Protesting members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria have shot dead a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Usman A.K. Umar during a clash with the police in Abuja today.
A Channels Television reporter was hit by bullets during the clash, a reminiscent of the first Boko Haram attack in Kano in which a Channels TV correspondent, Enenche Akogwu, was killed on January 20, 2012.
Umar, a former Principal Staff Officer to the Inspector General of Police, was in charge of Operations at the Federal Capital Territory Police Command.
NewsmakersNG learnt that Umar was gunned down as he tried to pacify the rampaging Shi’ite members who disrupted commercial activities and destroyed vehicles during their protest.
He was reportedly taken to an undisclosed hospital where he reportedly died.
