A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the “immediate release” of former Abia State governor, Orji Kalu, from the Nigerian Correctional Service.
Justy Mohammed Liman today granted an application moved by Kalu’s counsel, Lateef Fagbemi, seeking his release.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) did not oppose the application.
In December last year, the court had sentenced Kalu, then a serving senator, to 12 years in prison for N7.65 billion fraud.
He was tried alongside his company, Slok Nigeria Limited, and Udeh Udeogu, who was Director of Finance and Accounts at the Abia State Government House during Kalu’s tenure as governor.
