The Governing Council of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), under the chairmanship of Dr Wale Babalakin, has removed the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, from office.

“The general public is hereby notified that at an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, 12th August, 2020 and in accordance with the statutory powers vested in it by law, the Governing Council of the University of Lagos removed Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe from office as Vice Chancellor of the university with immediate effect.

“This decision was based on Council’s investigation of serious acts of wrongdoing, gross misconduct, financial recklessness and abuse of office against Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe,” Oladejo Azeez, Registrar and Secretary to Council, said in a statement.

The decision was reportedly taken at the end of a meeting of the council held at the secretariat of the National Universities Commission (NUC), in Abuja, today.

In attendance were 11 of the 12 council members, majority of whom voted for the removal of the VC.

NewsmakersNG reported that the university had fixed an emergency meeting of the council to hold from today through Friday, August 14 at Fraiser Suites, a hotel located at Central Business District, Abuja, but later moved the venue to the NUC headquarters located on Aguiyi Ironsi Way.

Shortly after the commencement of the meeting earlier today, Babalakin reportedly appealed to members in attendance to jettison the first four items on the agenda to move straight to the fifth one, which was the the approval of the investigative reports set up by the council to audit the university’s expenditure in about 18 months.
