The White House has confirmed a deadly attack on a convoy moving United States Embassy staffers in Anambra State.
The incident happened this evening in the Amiyi/Eke Ochuche communities in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.
Four staff members of the Embassy on a humanitarian mission were reportedly shot dead in the attack.
John Kirby, the spokesperson for the National Security Council, in his briefing disclosed that no American casualty was recorded in the attack.
“But we are aware of some casualties, perhaps even some killed, but I don’t want to get too far ahead of where we are right now,” the National Security Council Spokesman told reporters.
“We confirm there was an incident on May 16 in Anambra state. U.S. Mission Nigeria personnel are working with Nigerian security services to investigate. The security of our personnel is always paramount, and we take extensive precautions when organizing trips to the field. We have no further comment at this time,” the US Mission Nigeria said in response to a Daily Trust inquiry.
